The Lenovo Classroom Director (LCD) solution allows teachers to monitor and control PC computer technology in the classroom while making learning a more interesting and effective process for students.

Computers are powerful tools with the capability to simultaneously empower teachers and distract students. The challenge is to:

  • Harness and control the power of PC technology to enable teachers to deliver lessons that combine text, graphics, motion and sound to make learning interesting and effective,
  • Prevent students from distracting themselves with Internet excursions, email, games, instant messaging and a growing list of other temptations vying for their attention.
  • Expand the ability of teachers and administrators to track, measure and improve teaching methods and learning effectiveness.

Lenovo Classroom Director achieves all of this and much more. The most effective way to evaluate its capabilities and impact is to look at it from the perspective of each of these audiences: Teachers, Students and Administrators.

Teachers
Lenovo’s Classroom Director gives teachers simultaneous, real-time and interactive control of all classroom PCs, or just a single PC for individualized attention. Using “Show” features, teachers can share their screen or a student's screen with all, one or just a few students. This is a feature that is very helpful when walking students through complex lessons or showing the class how one student solved or approached a problem.

Teachers can keep students focused on the subject at hand by monitoring their screen and using other LCD capabilities to limit access to web sites, software and printers. Or, the teacher can blank all screens at any time to gain attention or focus the class in some direction.

The expansive ability to test students gives new meaning and value to the phrase “pop quiz”. Along with more traditional testing, teachers can create, store and populate student screens with short progress tests designed to act as chapter quizzes. These tests can provide a series of snap shots to measure the student’s understanding and retention of material as it is being delivered.

Valuable for class and individual student measurements, this function also provides teachers with immediate feedback on the success of their teaching methods. This allows them to adjust their methodology or perhaps to segment the class to assist those who may be falling behind. With LCD you don’t wait until a student is failing to take remedial action. You can begin to take corrective action at the earliest signs of trouble.

The polling tool can also be both fun and functional. Students will feel that their voices and opinions are important and frequent polling provides teachers with another data point on student interest, attention and enthusiasm.

Simple, icon driven controls make it easy for even the least technical teachers to quickly master LCD and to control and direct the classroom technology.

Students
From the students perspective the LCD tools are the same as those used by the teacher, however the impact on them is very different. For students, the teachers ability to gather information at both the class and individual level, means that students experience fewer prolonged periods of time when they are not processing information and feeling frustrated or left behind. And the personalized screen sharing capability and one-to-one messaging allows students to get individual teacher assistance as needed, but without the stigma of a teacher hovering over their desk for prolonged periods.

So at the same time LCD is providing teachers with classroom control and feedback on both a macro and micro level – for the student it opens a more effective and personalized channel of communication with their teacher.

Administrators
The primary challenge facing teachers and administrators today is to improve teaching effectiveness. All too often traditional testing and evaluations indicate when a student (and possibly the institution) is failing. LDC provides real-time information that can be translated into educational intelligence which can translate into immediate corrective action. And “failing” students can be supported before they become “failed” students.

Lenovo Classroom Director can also take the micro and macro data accumulated at the classroom level and provide interpretations that Administrator’s can use to measure and improve institutional effectiveness. And LCD is very resistant to attempts to disable or disrupt its performance, which is a major plus for Administrators.
