Big screen with great resolution. Performance is better than regular laptops and MacBooks. Touch screen is very responsive. Works better with Windows 8 than Windows 10.
The cooling system is a bit noisy but is barely noticeable once it's regularly used. Mouse and keyboard don't have a rechargeable batteries. Also to enable the Bluetooth to work you need to dedicate one USB port.

Hard disk failed within two months. Procedure for fix/replacement really unhelpful. Don't like the function key at bottom right - bottom right should be control.

Should be able to switch off touchpad more easily.

Thin and lightweight. Performance is good enough for the price.
Touch pad is awful. Unresponsive, even after changing the sensitivity settings on multiple occasions. Have to hold down on the pad really hard.

Keyboard very clear and great to use.

TrackPoint and three track-point buttons make the computer a joy to use in tight areas where a mouse is a nuisance or when using the computer on your lap.

The anti-glare screen may not look as snazzy as the highly reflective screens of many models but it is superb in use, especially when using over long periods.
A caps lock light would have been very useful, although the on-screen indicator when you start typing is okay.

  • Ask an Owner

Here's a list of the questions other shoppers have asked owners of the E550

    1. Rilind asked on
Hi, i wanted to ask about the build quality, it is a large laptop so... Is it good?
      1. BRYAN replied on
I have had several lenoves in the past and have always found them to be well built when compaired to similar priced ones I find them better built than more expensive ones hope this helps
        Bryan
    2. Oliver asked on
Does the solid state drive have enough room to do much?
      1. Rob replied on
My machine has 448Gb of storage. That's plenty for my ordinary domestic purposes. Windows 10 & Open Office are about all I run and they use about 76Gb. I don't game or store vast amounts of media on it. That's all on a network drive so everyone can get at it. To be honest, I had forgotten that the disk is Solid State.
    3. Akram asked on
Does anyone know what spill resistant means on E550?
      http://shop.lenovo.com/gb/en/laptops/thinkpad/edge-series/e550/#tab-features

      1. Marc replied on
That's more a question for the manufacturer, but whatever you spill on the keyboard will definitely get under the keys.

    4. Changle asked on
Is there any discount for students for the E550 or E450 in UK?
How is the battery when using for film watching or MS wording?
Will the E450 be available very soon in UK?
      1. Paul replied on
Battery is very good for film watching you should easily get a few films before needing to charge up. when using office automation software your sorted for most of the day. although I would suggest keeping the battery topped up when ever possible like any battery. as far as discounts go best to check the Lenovo student discount website (https://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/gbeducation/StdAffinityPortal/en_GB/Lenovo:EnterStdAffinity?affinity=gbeducation).

        Hope that helps
    5. Changle asked on
How is the battery, especially when watching one film or using the MS word? 5 hrs?
Why is there no E450 at UK? coz the E550 is little too heavy for me.
      1. Leon replied on
I get 5 hours or so with constant use but have ssd
    6. Kerr asked on
How well does Linux run on it
      Fedora 64bit
      1. E550 user replied on
Not familiar with Linux other than it is an operating system which means you'd need to take all of the preinstalled software and drivers off - and you may (or may not) have problems once Linux is installed as the OS with drivers for certain Lenovo propriety devices which are clearly setup for Windows unless Linux versions are available or Linux works natively with such devices anyway
    7. Jack asked on
I've been thinking about going for an E550 with the SSHD 500GB5400 8GB Cache instead of the standard 500GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm, 2.5". Would the difference in performance really be that noticeable? Also, can someone explain to me how the SSHD gives faster performance with the 5400rpm than the standard 7200rpm HDD?
Also wanted to know if the standard 4GB of RAM should be capable of lasting at least 5 years? Planning on using the laptop mainly for word processing and presentations. May also install a small game or two.
      Thanks.
      1. Kas replied on
        Hi Jack;

SSHD is a waste of money.
As you just mentioned you only need the laptop for word processing and presentations go for SSD ( doesnt matter even its lower capacity). The benefits includes thinner, lighter, efficient, smoother, faster and durable laptop. The benefits will also help in future as you are buying a machine for the next 5 years and you should invest in future technologies not obsolete ones

Also, dont buy directly from Lenovo - they are a rip off. My keyboard melted away over night whilst in office with 50 other machines. No external factor that have caused the damage unless the heat came from underneath. Lenovo refused to cover warranty actually was a shock. The part itself was £20 odd and the just to replace it they charged a whooping £212 labour .... :@
