    Uncompromisingly Thin & Light...

    But MIL-SPEC Tough

©Constructed™ with satellite-grade carbon fiber, the new X1 Carbon is the toughest ThinkPad ever made. In fact, we perform nearly a dozen separate military-grade specification tests—all under extreme conditions with dust, vibration, heat, cold, altitude, humidity, solar radiation, and fungus. You can rely on ThinkPad despite what life throws your way.

And of course, the full-sized, backlit keyboard is spill-resistant, as you’d expect from a ThinkPad X1 Carbon.

The military specification tests are not intended to be a guarantee of performance under these environmental conditions.

Starting just over two and a half pounds / 1.18 kg, the X1 Carbon is ultralight.

Well built, very light for such a powerful machine. Nice keyboard and screen. Wigig is very impressive. No need to connect by cable but get within range and all plugged in devices on Wigig appear. A clever solution. Overall, extremely pleased with the laptop and Wigig
Only minor. Would be nice to have backlight on keyboard come on when you touch the keyboard and go off 10-15 seconds after typing finishes, or would be nice for the system to retain your setting and keep it. It always defaults to off (haven't found any way of retaining the setting).

Light weight. Screen is not of the glossy massive resolution rather it emulates print on paper it is very easy on the eye. Weight is best in class. Startup with windows 10 and solid state drive is very fast certainly no excuse to make coffee while booting.

Super light, nice keyboard, screen tilts 180 degrees
The speakers are pretty terrible; worse than a smart phone.
The trackpad's touchbuttons are noisy and feel a bit clunky/cheap.

Here's a list of the questions other shoppers have asked owners of the X1 Carbon

    1. Fred asked on
      Hi there
      I want to know
      1) is this laptop totally silent? I've been told it has no fan so you never even hear a hum, is this true?
      2) sometimes 'antiglare matte' can mean many things. When a black screen can you see your own reflection or just a faint outline?
      3) Obviously along with no Ethernet it has no CD drive. Does anyone know how easy it is to plug in an external CD/DVD drive? Is it compatable?

      4)
Is the touchpad also a button in itself? Or just a touchpad? Does it have buttons below the touchpad or just the 3 above?

      Huge thanks
      1. Andy Morse replied on
        Hi Fred,
        Hope this helps.
        1) It's mostly silent. But there is a small fan-like sound when the processor is being stretched. If there's no fan then I don't know what that it is but it's not annoying or intrusive.
2)The screen is very non-reflective. Because I've only had mine in winter months I haven't given this a year-round test but I've never been conscious of reflections at all.
        3) Very easy. Just get a USB connected drive. No problem. I prefer to use Windows 7 so if you are using Windows 10 then make sure the drive is Windows 10 compatible.
        4) The touchpad is a button itself (double-tap for select, two fingers for scroll etc.). No buttons below, just the three buttons above. The buttons are much improved from earlier versions of the X1 but I have to say that wherever possible I do use a mouse, my own preference.
        Best wishes,
        Andy
    2. Danny asked on
      how does it handle autocad
      1. Yang replied on
I'm sorry, I don't use AutoCAD. However, it did perform smoothly while I'm using PowerDirector and Photoshop. Most importantly, It is super light so I can carry it everywhere I go. So I think it have done a pretty good job so far. I'm very happy about it ;) hope this would help
      2. Greg replied on
I have used some 3d programmes such as sketch up with no problems whatsoever. Haven't used autocad specifically though.
    3. P. asked on
does this model seriously come without an ethernet port?
SO disappointing if it's the case, for a laptop that otherwise meets all my needs.
(how could they even do such a mistake...)
      1. Dan replied on
Nope... no ethernet cable but if you get the docking port I think there is one on that...
      2. Francesc replied on
No but you can buy it with the cheap one link ethernet adaptor.
      3. Lee replied on
The case is so thin, an ethernet port would have changed the footprint of the laptop (so it is by design). Wi-fi is your only option without adaptors or other kit, as mentioned in other answers. A USB adapter that plugs into the laptop and gives an RJ-45 ethernet port, sounds like the way forward.
    4. Michael asked on
Hi, I just want to know can I choose the USA keyboard for the thinkpad X1 Carbon? thanks
      1. Dmitrii replied on
What do you mean by "choosing" a keyboard? I imagine you can buy a model with US keyboard layout - but this should be addressed to Lenovo. As well, you can switch to a layout you like in any modern OS you'd install on it.
      2. VIET replied on
it a little bit thing. I think. Anyway. you can select UK keyboard or US keyboard
    5. Jen asked on
Hi, my partner just bought one of these laptops, he wants to swap the hard drive for a bigger one, it came with a 256GB can this be changed for a 500Gb one or bigger?
      1. Dave, The Emerald Isle replied on
Don't know, I'm afraid. I would suggest contacting Lenovo directly for an answer.
If they will do it, I expect it would cost quite a bit over the odds.
Why not use an external hard drive, which is what I do, to store all my documents, etc.?
    6. Ross asked on
My partner is looking at purchasing this laptop, is it capable of running photoshop, lightroom and premier as she is a designer
      1. peter replied on
Mine has i7 and 16GB of RAM so it is certainly powerful enough. I don't know about the scope of the colour calibration controls that I imagine a professional designer would need since my use of Photoshop is at a much simpler level.
      2. Colin replied on
I purchased it to run Autocad and Sketchup and it runs them with no issues. I recently installed the Adobe suite and it runs photoshop and all of the other programs in the full suite so yes it will do exactly what you want. It is also incredibly light with a long lasting battery. A truly excellent computer.
    7. Samm asked on
Is it easy to open it to clean it? With my current Sony Vaio, I can easily swap HDD, CDROM, RAM. It's very easy to clean the Fan and replace the CPU paste. Can I easily access all these with the X1? I travel a lot, and work in dusty environment and need to clean every 3-4 months - many thanks!
      1. Imran replied on
Yes, only 9 screws to remove on the base gives you access to all the internal parts !
      2. JEAN replied on
        Hello,

Well I don't think so, and it's not recommended.
        JR
    8. Dominic asked on
      Hello,

Can any tell me if your configuration comes with 1TB HDD and 16GB RAM?
      1. peter replied on
Mine came with no HDD but 256MB SSD and yes, 16GB RAM.
