What You Are Saying

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Laptop throttles at low temperature CPU and GPU dial back once temperature hits 67C. Keeps the laptop cool, but slows it down. The fan speed is triggered by different temperatures. As the laptop gets hotter, the fans increase in speed to cool it down. But because the laptop slows down performance once the low temperature of 67 degrees Celsius is hit, the fans never get a chance to ramp up and cool the system down. I can't recommend this laptop for gaming until 2 things happen: 1) Fans are programmed to be more aggressive, reaching their maximum speeds sooner to keep the laptop from throttling. After all, whats the point of a better cooling system if the laptop won't run fast enough to even trigger it? 2) The maximum temperature before the laptop throttles back performance needs to be increased. It's currently at about 67C, it needs to be at 80c. The components inside can go up to 88C safely and not have any problems so the proposed max of 80c is still conservative. Both of the above need to happen in order to get great performance. I've attached two photos showing the voltage, temperature, and speed (frequency) of the GPU during a gaming session. You can see the throttle for yourself. I didn't screen shot the CPU but it behaves in a similar manner, slowing down at 67C. It doesn't show fan speed, but the maximum speed they reached was about 40% total capacity so they weren't even working their hardest during the temp throttle.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nearly perfect I am a software engineer, so my requirements are probably atypical. Although this is considered a "gaming" laptop, it was purchased because of the specs and performance level. I never play games and only want a powerful laptop for compiling code and graphics intensive 3D applications. I am very impressed thus far. Love the keyboard (VERY important to me) and performance is amongst the best I've used. I only wish it had UHD and possibly a larger SSD, but otherwise a nearly perfect laptop for my requirements. Well done Lenovo.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Laptop I have gone through many laptops through the years. I was extremely excited to get this one. I will start off, overall this is a good laptop. It's reliable and does what I need. With that said, it is slow. I am going to replace the 1 TB hard drive that came with it for a SSD upgrade in hopes that it speeds it up. I write software so this is a must. I am also going to upgrade the RAM from 8 GB to 16 GB. I found that the back of the laptop is a bit difficult to take off for doing upgrades. The mouse buttons are not the best. I use my external mouse for better button functionality. I wish manufactures would leave off the bloat ware.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Laptop Got this at the start of the year and it's been a good buy. The machine is solid and very reliable. Its been very fast and have had no problems. The touch screen isn't bad, but not sure I'd get another touch screen. The responsiveness is sometimes lacking, and this is 100% due to the program being used and not the computer but still it's annoying at times. And the accidental clicks can be troublesome when bumping the screen. The external CD drive would be nice if it was built in but not a deal breaker for me. But overall very satisfied, the computer was good, it was shipped fast, and as of now I would recommend if you're looking for a high powered graphic laptop.

Question And Answer

When can the Y700 15.6 inch Ideapad is available? because now it says temporarily Unavailable.

Asked by: HelloAS
The machine was pulled from the website presumably due to the amount of people who returned it as a brick. Too many peoples' machines were bricked and unbootable.

In a previous question regarding whether or not the 128GB SSD was available to load programs to you answered "Just get the 512 SSD". I don't see that as an option. Is the 512 accessible to load programs to? Thank you

Asked by: rawkluvah
No matter what hardrive you get, you will have full access to load programs. The 1TB 5400 RPM + 128 SSD is good for storage and space, but your hardrive will have to catch up with other programs which is a huge disadvantage. I dont see why a 5400 RPM is on there. If you want full flash speed then get the 512 SSD only. It has no moving parts unlike a 5400 RPM harddrive so you will load programs extremely fast in seconds. SSD 4 Life.
